This information has been developed to assist the welfare of feral camels captured for the abattoir trade and to provide the reader with hints to help in the capture and handling of feral camels. Hopefully the collection will be easier, more rewarding and the camels will be less stressed by the adoption of the techniques found in this manual.
The information is divided into sections that deal with the relevant biology of the uncontrolled herd, methods to locate and capture camel herds, handling freshly caught camels, feeding, transport and last but not least the emergency destruction of captured camels.
This information should be used only as a guide. There are many variations of methods of capture, handling, yard design etc., which individuals will find are more suitable to their particular situation. These variations should comply with the requirements indicated in the CSIRO publication 'Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals: The Camel.'
This Association has administered various research projects over the past 6 years and will continue to do this to enhance the stable development of this new industry.
